The researchers tracked the patients in two hospital wards and used the gel to perform automatic identification. In the initial study, the researchers collected images by installing cameras in corridors, patient rooms and alcohol-hand gel.

Of all the 170 medical staff who had entered the patient‘s room, only 30 correctly used cleanser. Then the research team used 80% of the image to train artificial intelligence system for algorithm to detect medical personnel, to track their between different cameras, moving from one place to another place, at any time to monitor their hand hygiene behavior. After the training, the remaining 20 percent of the people tested the system, with 75 percent accuracy in determining whether someone was using a pharmacy.
